Mattias IA Eklundh – Freak Guitar Master Class

Freak Guitar Master Class—this title should be self-explanatory. In his two-hour class, Swedish guitarist Mattias IA Eklundh will demonstrate the wide scope of his musical universe. As such, he will not only explain how he develops musical ideas for his songs, but he’s also going to give a glimpse into his bottomless bag of tricks, which includes harmonics, elements of Indian music, and odd meters. Eklundh’s motto is “Grow your own mustache,” by which he means “Leave the beaten path and find your own way.”

Born in Gothenburg in 1969, Mattias is a virtuoso musician whose ability of extracting jaw-dropping tones and colors from his instrument has put him into the upper league of world-class guitarists. But he is also a gifted entertainer who keeps his master class participants engaged with hilarious and sometimes absurd anecdotes.

Eklundh is best-known for his own band, Freak Kitchen, as well as for his work with artists such as Jonas Helborg, Selvaganesh, Béla Fleck, Steve Vai, and Dweezil Zappa. He has also released several solo albums, and his unique guitar style can be heard on three albums by Soilwork.

Heiko Jung – Creative Bass Playing: From the Bassline to Improvisation

Attention bassists! In this master class, Heiko Jung will open up his toolbox and show his concepts for developing a personal style on the bass—away from the basics, and toward creative approaches.

Operating between the genres of jazz, classical, and metal, Heiko (Panzerballet, Martin Grubinger, Passport) is a musical chameleon. And while he enjoys working within an elevated level of complexity, his playing is defined by following fundamental musical concepts. Understanding structure and respecting the composition at hand are as much on his agenda as a willingness to take risks and trying to minimize any limits in his ability for expression.

John Browne – Expand the Boundaries of Your Own Imagination

When talking about guitars with John Brown, it won’t take long until you’re discussing his various playing techniques. In his two-hour master class, John will show several excellent techniques and exercises for improving right-hand strength and endurance. Even downpicking exercises will train different areas of the right hand, building muscles that you didn’t even know you had!

John will also discuss songwriting methods that will help participants create coherent songs, rather than just combining licks and riffs in their own music.

This master class will not only help in moving beyond your own limitations and to cross boundaries, it also offers a path for getting past dreaded songwriting blocks.

As the guitarist of the London-based, trans-continental band Monuments, John is without a doubt part of the avant garde of progressive metal. His impressive technique, especially his unique way of including downstrokes in his playing, needs to be seen to be believed. When it comes to songwriting, John draws from a rich pool of inspiration, always making sure to not use technique for techniques sake, but to serve the song. As such, Monuments (which, together with Periphery and Tesseract, is considered to be one of the main representatives of the progressive/tech, metal/djent scene) offers a brutal mix of fat riffs, spherical, catchy melodies, aggressive breaks, and tricky meter changes.

Uli Jon Roth – Sky Academy

Now Uli brings his Sky Academy to the Guitar Summit 2018. In his two-hour master class, Uli will talk about his musical philosophy and approach, and he will offer glimpses into his musical universe, which even guitar heroes like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, or Eddie Van Halen admire. Jon Gomm – Two Hand Grooves

Hearing British fingerstyle guitarist Jon Gomm play, it’s clear that what he does has little to do with classical guitar technique. In his “Two Hand Grooves” master class, he will discuss his holistic approach to composition and songwriting, which is based on questioning everything. “We have some wood, strings, and frets; what can we do? Let’s take a look at the acoustic guitar as if we’ve never seen it before, as if we didn’t know fingerpicking is. Forget how you’ve used your hands before, and what their movement has been. We’ll start there, and will come up with something new!”

Without a doubt, Jon is one of the exceptional guitarists of our time. It’s rare to see a musician drawing from as many different aspects of an acoustic guitar, and when he works his instrument with every possible—and many impossible—techniques, singing a song with his eyes closed, he creates a completely unique world of sound, in which rhythm, harmony, percussion, sound, vocals, and atmosphere are melted into one.

Stu Hamm

Participants in American bassist Stu Hamm’s master class will learn about his unorthodox approach to playing the instrument, which combines non-traditional techniques, including polyphonic playing, two-handed tapping, slapping and popping, chords, and harmonies, into an organic whole.

After graduating from Boston’s renowned Berklee College of Music in 1978, Stu quickly began to present his spectacular technique both in solo performances as well as with various bands, covering a genre-busting amalgam of rock, jazz, fusion, classical, and country. His innovative work did’t go unnoticed, and before long, he became a sideman for Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, and he received Guitar Player magazine’s award for best jazz bassist twice in a row and best rock bassist three times in a row. He’s the only musician to receive both awards in the same year.

Based in San Francisco, Stu has released several successful method books and videos over the last two decades. Serving as the director of Hollywood’s Musician’s Institute’s bass program and teaching clinics around the world, Stu is renowned as an educator, and he his considered as one of the most influential bassists of the last 50 years.
