Running Order

Following its successful premiere in 2017, Europe’s largest guitar event, the Guitar Summit, will once again present an extensive program in Mannheim’s Rosengarten. Last year visitors could look forward to more than 400 exhibiting brands, as well as seven stages featuring more than 160 workshops, lectures, and concerts—all revolving 100 percent around the guitar.

MORE THAN 400 EXHIBITING BRANDS!

The list of the 400 exhibiting brands reads like a Who’s Who of the guitar world. Besides legendary companies and big names, smaller custom makers, secret stars of the scene, and well-known luthiers are an important part of the Guitar Summit, giving visitors a complete sense of the market.

MORE THAN 150 WORKSHOPS ON SEVEN STAGES!

Once again, the Guitar Summit will include a particularly attractive and extensive program of workshops. As such, SEVEN DIFFERENT STAGES will feature more than 150 WORKSHOPS revolving around guitar, bass, pedals, amps, and recording. The visitors can look forward to satisfying their desire to learn with a wide variety of workshops and clinics.

Guitar lessons for beginners with Peter Bursch

Peter Bursch mit Gitarre

Peter Bursch is Germany’s most celebrated guitar teacher. First published more than 40 years ago, his guitar book has been used by millions of hobby guitarists and future professionals to learn the instrument. At the 2018 Guitar Summit, Bursch will offer hands-on lessons in cooperation with Voggenreiter publishers. Limited to 20 participants each, Bursch’s workshops are offered Friday – Sunday. Specially designed for either kids or adults, the workshops will demonstrate how much fun can be had experiencing the success of playing a first song after a minimum of time. As such, the workshops are perfect for people with no previous knowledge of the instrument. Participants don’t even need to bring their own guitars, as they will be provided by Voggenreiter publishers.

Ortega Ukulele Workshop for beginners

Ortega Guitars is offering several Ukulele Workshops with Rüdiger Eisenhauer for anyone wishing to give these little instruments a try. Workshops will include material for beginners and more advanced players.

Martin Engelien and Marco T. Alleata (Germany)

In their workshop Generations Connected in Bass, Cordial presents the experienced bassist and producer Martin Engelien and—representing a new generation of bass players—Marco T. Alleata, whose gigs include playing sold-out stadiums in the Middle East as a member of Persian pop star Shadmehr Aghili’s band. At the 2018 Guitar Summit, Engelien and Alleata will use their two workshops to present a bass-focused conversation between two generations of players, and they look forward to including the audience in their discussion as well. Topics will include “Different approaches to playing the bass,” “Challenges: Then and now,” “Production in changing times,” and “Learning from one another through constructive criticism.” Stop on by and join the discussion!

Pickup Talk with Häussel, Kloppman, Amber, and TV Jones

At the Pickup Talk, an illustrious panel will discuss everything around the topic of guitar pickups. We’ve invited Harry Häussel of Häussel Pickups, Andreas Kloppmann of Kloppmann Electronics, and Wolfgang Damm of Amber Pickups. The panel will be completed by TV Jones.

Udo Pipper

In his workshop “Different Electric Guitar Physics,” Gitarre & Bass author Udo Pipper will talk about his experiences around the topic of good guitar tone. This session is all about the facts on hardware, pickups, electronics, setup, amps, wood, finish, and glue.

Stefan Huth (Germany)

Over the last 15 years, Stefan Huth has applied his approach to the guitar to every style of music. Especially at home with progressive rock, Huth also gives solo tapping concerts and plays progressive works with classical orchestras. The 2018 releases of his bands ISAAC VACUUM and The Spur are currently being praised by the press. For several years now, Huth has also been working with Touch Guitars.

Mattias IA Eklundh (SWE)

The swedish guitar legend describes his workshop with a twinkle in his eye: „Well, I tend to go into the „dark side of music“, providing the crowd many, very useful musical tools that’ll make them grow and show new ways to approach the guitar (and life). I call it Freak Guitar Clinics.“ He will also be available for a masterclass. More info soon.

Alexandr Misko (RUS)

Alexandr Misko sure knows his way around a fretboard.  An acoustic guitarist with a unique voice on the instrument, this Russian player is a revelation. With his blistering chops, young Alex has notched up 2.7 million views with YouTube videos featuring his interpretations of Georges Michael’s Careless Whisper and Michel Jackson’s Billie Jean. His finger-style playing lays gorgeous melodies over grooves that sound like a full-blown rhythm section. Plugging into a Hughes & Kettner era acoustic amp for his workshop, he will show how to get very creative when interpreting compositions on guitar and how to achieve surprisingly musical effects with objects you normally wouldn’t associate with the guitar.

John Browne (UK)

John Browne

Mayones signature artist John Browne – guitarist and song writer for the progressive metal band Monuments, beside Periphery and Tesseract one of the biggest acts in the Progressive Metal/Djent- scene – will present workshops and a masterclass at the Guitar Summit. John describes his workshop as follows: „Welcome to my workshop! Here I’ll be taking Mayones guitars, right hand stamina/ strength, songwriting and a barrage of techniques and tips that will help you stay out of writer’s block!”

Martin Miller (DE)

For his workshop at Guitar Summit, Martin Miller will put emphasis on topics such as improvisation, technique, and phrasing. Further, Martin will intensively address all questions related to playing the guitar and learning music and will step by step reveal the secrets of his guitar playing. Martin’s methods are based on many years of experience as professor at University of Music in Dresden as well as on his globally sold online courses („Improvisation Masterclass“ at Jamtrackcentral).

Tom Quayle (UK)

For his workshop at the Guitar Summit, Tom Quayle will be teaching his signature legato style, fretboard visualisation, and improvisation approach. You will learn how to see scales and chords on the fretboard in a unique way and how to incorporate your technique to its full potential in an improvisational setting, over even the most complex of chord changes.

More workshop announcements will follow soon!

GUITAR SUMMIT GOES D.I.Y.

TUBE AMP DOCTOR MASTERCLASS

One of the highlights of the Guitar Summit 2018 will be the opportunity to build your own boutique amplifier under the expert guidance of Tube Amp Doctor’s head of production, Stephan Mayer.

First come, first serve!

This Guitar Summit class will take place on September 8. Limited to five participants, plenty of individual attention is guaranteed. The class may be booked immediately, simply by purchasing one of the five masterclass packages available in the Tube Amp Doctor online shop.

Here’s what’s included in the package:

– Exclusive workshop under the expert guidance of TAD’s head of production, Stephan Mayer.

– Three-day pass for the Guitar Summit in Mannheim’s Rosengarten, including Friday and Saturday concerts and the full workshop program.

– Complete Tube Amp Doctor “One-Twelve-16-Combo 5E3-Style” kit, including all necessary parts.

– A cabinet that’s handmade in the USA, covered in original tweed and lacquered.

– Upgraded Jensen Blackbird speaker without up-charge (sponsored by Jensen Loudspeakers).

– Custom-fit padded TAD amp cover.

– Complete set of tools for building Tweed kits.

The package includes all necessary parts, so that the amp will be playable by the end of the class. In addition, each amp will be certified with a VDE inspection after completion. After the class, participants have the choice of taking their amp and tools with them, or to have them shipped by TAD.

But that’s not all: Because Tube Amp Doctor is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, an exclusive TAD Guitar Summit limited edition amp will be presented at the event.

Build Your Own Pedal by Moody Sounds

In this one-of-a-kind workshop, Swedish pedal manufacturer Moody Sounds offers the ultimate opportunity to build your own fuzz or booster pedal under competent guidance, right at the Guitar Summit 2018. Mastermind and pedal designer Albin Rolsun will lead the workshop (in English), ensuring that every participant ends up with a functioning pedal. After a short introduction and explanation of the parts used, it will take about 3 – 4 hours to build the pedal. Soldering irons, here we come!

GUITAR SUMMIT ACADEMY

An addition to the already extensive workshop program is found in the new GUITAR SUMMIT ACADEMY. Presenting small master classes, the Guitar Summit Academy looks at a variety of topics in great detail, explaining each area in theory and practice. GUITAR SUMMIT ACOUSTIC & ELECTRIC PARTY

There could be no Guitar Summit without live music. Like last year, we’ll end the Friday and Saturday of the event with a Live Music Party, with Friday night being all about the acoustic guitar, and Saturday cranking it up to be loud and electrified.

The lineup for Friday evening’s Guitar Summit ACOUSTIC PARTY is in place.

Opening the show will be fingerstylist Timo Brauwers. Representing Breedlove Guitars, Brauwers impresses with a highly individual technique that makes his playing stand out and instantly recognizable. Alternating between spherical harmonics and percussive elements, Brauwers’ original compositions cover a wide range, from upbeat and happy to more melancholic moods. A show to sit down, listen, and enjoy!

Friday evening’s Guitar Summit Acoustic Party will be the grand finale of the Guitar Summit Unplugged Tour, which will be playing throughout northern Germany prior to the event, and which includes fingerstylists Magdalena Kowalczyk (Poland), Regina Bakhritdinova (Russia) und Illona Bolou (France). Fingerstyle guitar fans will not want to miss this show!

Only 17 years old, Marcin Patrzalek has already received the first prize at Poland’s largest TV talent show, Must Be the Music. Having started to play guitar at the age of ten, he has developed into an excellent fingerstyle guitarist with widespread success on Facebook and YouTube.

Hailing from Riga, Latvia, Dmitry Lisenko has developed an unusual approach to playing acoustic bass guitar, and his style is best described as “solo percussion style bass,” or the “Andy McKee of the bass guitar.” Playing a Warwick Alien acoustic bass, Lisenko’s percussive technique leads to a sound that is as original as it is eyebrow-raising, and listeners often think that they’re hearing drums or other percussion instruments in addition to the bass. This show is a must-see!

With a ludicrously percussive playing technique, Finnish fingerstyle virtuoso and Hughes & Kettner endorser Petteri Sariola is often referred to as a one-man-band. Having spent years developing a unique style that includes clever use of effects, great vocals, and a rock ‘n’ roll attitude, Sariola packs the power of a band into his steel-string guitar and he thrills his audiences with an impressive performance. Don’t miss this one!

Heavy metal and nylon strings? Dutch guitarist Thomas Zwijsen is known for his Nylon Maiden project, where he plays classic song by IRON MAIDEN, arranged for solo nylon-string guitar. His flamenco-inspired playing leaves no question that this is a winning combination!

Last but not least, due to the overwhelming response from last year’s Guitar Summit, we invited England’s Jon Gomm back to knock us out with another breathtaking performance.

Saturday evening’s Guitar Summit Electric Party is bound to be equally diverse.

Marcus Deml’s blues-rock formation The Blues Poets creates a classic, organic, authentic sound, and with its authentic vibe, the band is a return to his musical roots of Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Deep Purple.

Sommerplatte, a band formed around Echo-Jazz prize winner Hanno Busch and bass player Claus Fischer, creates a symbiosis of genres by combining jazz with the loop-based aesthetic of electronic music and the catchy qualities of pop. Required listening, even for those who aren’t jazz fans!

The evening culminates with the Guitar Summit All Star Jam, where Thomas Blug and his Rockanarchie will deliver a rock ‘n’ roll firework with numerous special guests, including Uli Jon Roth and Phil X.

Thomas Blug

As one of Germany’s most famous guitarists, Roth is known to rock fans as the mastermind behind the Scorpions, and he is universally considered a gifted improviser and respected for his fusion of tradition and innovation. Roth has been a major influence on international guitar stars such as Metallica’s Kirk Hammet and Scandinavian virtuoso Yngwe Malmsteen. Roth’s tonal spectrum covers a wide range between rock and classical.

Uli Roth

Canadian guitarist Phil X plays with Bon Jovi, and he is also a busy studio musician who can be heard on countless albums by artists such as Tommy Lee, Kelly Clarkson, and Alice Cooper. In Bon Jovi, he took the over the role vacated by Richie Sambora.

Also scheduled to participate in the All Star Jam is bassist extraordinaire Stu Hamm, whose innovative playing is can be heard with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, with whom he is a frequent sideman. Hailing from San Francisco, Hamm also tours as a solo performer and teacher, and there is no doubt that he is one of the most influential electric bassists of the last half century.

Gothenburg-based Freak Kitchen mastermind Mattias “IA” Eklund’s virtuosity has catapulted him into the league of players like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani. In Mannheim, the Swedish innovator will use his trademark playing techniques to add an experimental touch to the Guitar Summit All Star Jam.

Thanks to his personal style and brilliant technique, Tom Quayle is considered to be one the world’s finest fusion guitarists. Quayle often tours with renowned artists such as Dweezil Zappa, he writes for the British Guitar Interactive magazine, and his instruction books are read by thousands of guitarists around the world.

Martin Miller received international acclaim as a guitarist and composer via Facebook and YouTube, which ultimately lead to being discovered by Jamtrackcentral.com, a website that also works with artists such as Guthrie Gowan (Steve Wilson) and Kiko Loureiro (Megadeth). He now regularly publishes popular methods and practice tracks that are used by countless guitarists around the world.

And the best part: Admission to these events is part of the Guitar-Summit ticket!

AND WHAT ELSE?

TUBE-AMPFINITY & BASS-AMPFINITY AT AMP WORLD 2018

Familiar from last year’s event, Musik Produktiv will be presenting its Tube-Ampfinity system. Allowing guitarists to combine and compare amps and speaker cabinets with the push of a button, this setup is a certain highlight of the Guitar Summit Amp World. And this year, bassists will be able to benefit from a similar switching system with the specially created Bass-Ampfinity, which allows the combination of various bass amps and speaker cabinets, again, with nothing but bush of some buttons.

Speaking of the Guitar Summit Amp World: We are changing the setup in the facility to create better room acoustics and ideal conditions for testing the gear.

STUDIOSZENE

Following excellent feedback from last year’s event, Studio Scene will return to the Guitar Summit. This is where you’ll find workshops and clinics with acclaimed authors, professionals, and first-rate studio players, who will cover all areas of the recording process.

EXPANDED BOUTIQUE AREA

Responding to the immense popularity of the Boutique Area, this year’s Guitar Summit will see this area further expanded. Many of last year’s exhibitors are returning, including several members of the European Guitar Builders e.V. (EGB), who will either participate in the EGB-booth or have their own tables.

GUITAR SUMMIT FLEA MARKET

Exclusively for used instruments, records, and CDs, the Guitar Summit Flea Market will take place in front of the Rosengarten on Saturday morning. Registration at www.guitarsummit.de/flohmarkt

FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL

Nobody will go hungry at the Guitar Summit! As was the case last year, a Food Truck Festival located immediately outside the event’s entrance offers culinary diversity.

I’M SOUND

Once again, I’m Sound will be a Guitar Summit partner. A branch of the Mannheimer Versicherung insurance specialists, the young company specializes in insurance for musicians their equipment, covering just about all the risks that a musician’s life may encounter. With its I’m Sound stage, the company presents one of our workshop locations. More info at www.sicher-laut-leben.de.
